LEJ Mission Statement
The LEJ Foundation was created to expose unlawful executions and create public awareness regarding each case. That is the beginning. We further vow to find justice for families who have suffered at the hands of malicious prosecutors in Texas by taking legal action.
Current Case
Currently, we are focused on the case of Lonnie Johnson, our namesake, who was unlawfully convicted and executed on July 24, 2007. We will pursue whatever legal means available to bring some semblance of justice to this travesty by holding accountable those who are responsible.
Future Endeavors
It is our intention to find a way to recruit experienced and unprejudiced death penalty attorneys into the Texas Judicial System so that there is a bigger pool of resources to fairly represent the accused in death penalty cases.
Through published materials and lectures, we also hope to motivate Democratic students’ participation in the political process of Texas now dominated by a Republican Congress to create a balance that actually represents its community. It’s our hope to encourage students to throw their hat into the ring by becoming political writers/observers, public speakers, lawyers and politicians that addresses the problems of unlawful convictions and executions and provide solutions.
Future, Future Endeavors
We also hope to support a political candidate who fully understands the problem of unlawful convictions and executions in Texas and who fits our profile of a reasonable and just individual with empathy, strength and stamina to fight what is wrong with the Texas Judicial System from the inside out.
Dedication
Lonnie was deeply loved by those surrounding him including is Mother, Fiancé, children, Aunt, grandchild, daughter-in-law and his beloved pen pals. He was extremely compassionate about the injustices that put him on death row and others who suffered similar fates. We seek Justice on his behalf and on the behalf of those who loved him.
We love you Lonnie, our Angel.
